The film "Freedom Writers" will be shown at the library on Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. This movie is based on the real life experiences of teacher, Erin Gruwell. Gruwell enters Woodrow Wilson High School ill-prepared for the challenges of her at-risk students. Met with conflict at every stage she finally makes a connection with her students through a discussion of "The Diary of Anne Frank" and encourages them to write their own daily journals. This inspirational story of a dedicated teacher is worth seeing. Starring Hilary Swank, Patrick Dempsey and Scott Glenn this film is rated PG-13 and is 123 minutes. Plan now to attend. We'll provide the popcorn!
Several new educational DVD's are now available. Some titles include the "Nature Tech" series where viewers can join storm chasers, lava samplers, and virtual wizards who trap lightning in a bottle for an examination of the most destructive forces on the planet. Some other series include "The Impressionists, "The American Revolution" and "Engineering an Empire." Stop in and check out all of these informative and educational programs.
A new adult fiction title is Lisa Jackson's "Absolute Fear" - Eve Renner has returned to New Orleans hoping to forget the past?.but it will not be forgotten. Other titles include "Heart Stopper" by Joy Fielding, "Scavenger" by David Morrell, "The Woods" by Harlan Coben, "Simple Magic" by Mary Balogh, "The Land of Mango Sunsets" by Dorothea Benton Frank and "Avalanche" by Patrick F. McManus.
New non-fiction tiles are "The Beck Diet Solution: Train Your Brain to Think Like a Thin Person" by Judith S. Beck and "Wildride: The History and Lore of Rodeo" by Joel H. Bernstein.
A new book for the young adult is "Perfect Girl" by Mary Hogan.
New books in the Lennea Lewis Slagle Children's Library include these chapter books "Meet Samantha" and "Samantha Learns a Lesson" by Susan S. Adler and "Chase" by Jessie Haas. New picture books are "Our New Baby" by Heather Maisner and "My Mother Talks to Trees" by Doris Gove.
"Oink!" is the theme for Storyhour on Tuesday, May 15, 2007 and Thursday, May 17. Storyhour is held every Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. and repeated each Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. for children ages 3 through kindergarten.
