The book, “War in Karen County: Armed Struggle for a Free and Independent Karen State in Southeast Asia” will be featured at a book signing at the library on Sunday, January 27 from 1-3 p.m. Local author, Tom Bleming will be on hand to sign copies of this recently released book. “War in Karen County” chronicles the long-lasting war that has been raging between the Myanmar military and the Karen people since 1949.

The Martin Scorsese film, “Golden Door” will be shown on Wednesday, January 30 at 6:30 p.m. In the beginning of the 20th century, a poor Sicilian farmer and his mother leave Italy in search of a better life in America. Before leaving they meet a mysterious woman named Lucy who is a Brit who wants to marry someone before they hit the opposite shore. The tough and sometimes cruel practices of Ellis Island are also explored in this sensitive drama. Shown in Italian and English with English subtitles, the film is rated PG-13 and is 120 minutes.

IRS forms are available at the library. Forms are arriving on a regular basis and are available at no charge, except for forms that require copying. The Internal Revenue Service website also has forms to download, http://www.irs.gov, as well as other information.

New for adults is the newest Elm Creek novel, “A New Year’s Quilt” by Jennifer Chiaverini. Master quilter, Sylvia is making a holiday quilt that she calls “New Year’s Reflections” for her new step-daughter - who is less than thrilled about her father’s recent remarriage. Other new fiction includes “Confessor” by Terry Goodkind, “Heart of Honor” by Kat Martin, “The Venetian Betrayal” by Steve Berry and “The Queen’s Lady” by Shannon Drake.

New adult non-fiction books are “Never Enough” by Joe McGinniss, “Boom! Voices of the Sixties: Personal Reflections on the ‘60s and Today” by Tom Brokaw, “Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far” by Amy Grant and “Sage-ing While Age-ing” by Shirley MacLaine.

A new title for the young adults is “Burned” by Ellen Hopkins.

The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children's Library has these new junior titles “The Snowflake: A Water Cycle Story” by Neil Waldman and “Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”

New easy titles are “Just Me and 6,000 Rats: a Tale of Conjunctions” by Rick Walton, “Josephine Wants to Dance” by Jackie French and “The Boy Who Painted Dragons” by Demi.

"How Long is Winter?" is the theme for Storyhour on Tuesday, January 29, 2008 and Thursday, January 31, 2008. Storyhour is held every Tuesday and Thursday throughout the year from 10 to 11 a.m. for children ages 3 through kindergarten.
