A new book by Barbara Wood is "Land of the Afternoon Sun." The story follows a disinherited English Baron and a New York heiress who marry and move west to Palm Springs in the 1920's when Palm Springs was just a budding town on the edge of the Mojave Desert. It is a saga about ambition on both large and small scales and the rapidly modernizing world as the harsh, sun-drenched landscape is transformed from a Native American haven to the playground of Hollywood's rich and famous. Barbara Wood has penned many sagas, including local favorites, "The Dreaming" and "Green City in the Sun."

Other new fiction books include "Frontier Justice" by Bill Brooks, "The Language of Sisters" by Amy Hatvany, "The Innocents" by Ace Atkins, "Killer Look" by Linda Fairstein, "White Bone" by Ridley Pearson, "Cold Shot" by Dani Pettrey, "Night and Day" by Iris Johansen, "Whitefern" by V.C. Andrews and "The Killer of Cibecue" by Nelson C. Nye. Pittacus Lore's "United as One" is among new YA titles, along with "Unfaithful: the Deception of Night" by Elisa S. Amore.

New nonfiction books are "The Slight Edge" by Jeff Olson, "Herb Gardening: How to Prepare the Soil, Choose Your Plants, and Care for, Harvest, and Use Your Herbs" by Melissa Melton Snyder and "Wyoming's Historic Ranches" by Nancy Weidel.

The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children's Library has these new junior books: "An Author's Odyssey" by Chris Colfer, "Peril At the Top of the World" by James Patterson and "The Seventh Element" by Wendy Mass. Some of the newer easy titles are "Dory's Story" by Bill Scollon, "What Pirates Really Do" by Melanie Joyce, "Princess! Fairy! Ballerina!" by Bethanie Deeney Murguia and "Teachers Rock" by Todd Parr.
