A mini-movie series begins Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. with “The Martian,” based on the book by Andy Weir. During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind. But, he has survived and finds himself stranded and alone... The film is rated PG-13 and is 141 minutes. The library provides the popcorn; please bring your own drink. “Gravity” will be featured on May 23 at 6:30 p.m. This 91 minute film is the story of two astronauts who work together to survive after an accident which leaves them stranded in space. Other films currently planned are Apollo 13 and 2001: a Space Odyssey.


It’s time to register your children for Summer Reading, “Libraries Rock!” which begins on Wednesday, May 30 for children that have completed the first through fifth grades. On Thursday, May 31 “PG-13 @ the Library” begins at 4 p.m., this is a series designed for teens and expected to continue through the summer. Also, be sure to register for the library’s reading incentive program, “Hey Kids” - for all ages!


A new novel by Jude Deveraux is “As You Wish.” One fateful summer Olivia, Kathy and Elsie find themselves together in Summer Hill, Virginia where they discover they have more in common than they realized. When they are presented with the opportunity of a lifetime – a chance to right the wrongs in their past – all three discover what can happen when dreams really do come true.


Other new fiction books are “Alternate Side” by Anna Quindlen, “Accidental Heroes” by Danielle Steel, “Honeymoon With Harry” by Bart Baker, “His Risk” by Shelley Shepard Gray, “Beneath a Prairie Moon” by Kim Vogel Sawyer, “Red Clark Rides Alone” by Gordon Young, Obsession Mine” by Anna Zaires, “The Darling Dahlias and the Unlucky Clover” by Susan Wittig Albert and “Red Alert” by James Patterson. New titles in the young adult section are “Frat Girl” by Kiley Roache and “Stormcaster” by Cinda Williams Chima.


“The Spinning Magnet: the Electromagnetic Force That Created the Modern World – and Could Destroy it” by Alanna Mitchell is among new non-fiction books along with “A Small Pile of Feathers: the Collected Poems of Gerry Spence” by Wyoming’s Gerry Spence and “UFOs and the White House: What Did Our Presidents Know and When Did They Know It” by William J. Birnes.


The Lennea Lewis Slagle Children's Library has these new junior books “The Case of the Slime Stampede” by Liam O’Donnell, “Waylon! Even More Awesome” by Sara Pennypacker, and a new series “Fashion Academy” by Sheryl Berk with titles like “Designer Drama” and “Model Madness.” Some of the newer easy books are “My Big Truck Book” by Roger Priddy, “Ten Magic Butterflies” by Danica McKellar and “Honk! Splat! Vroom!” by Barry Gott.


“Planting and Growing!” is the theme for Storyhour on Tuesday, May 22, 2018. Storyhour is held throughout the year from 10 to 11 a.m. every Tuesday! Call 334-3274 anytime to hear a recorded story, Dial-A-Story is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
