Val Richard DeGroot

Val Richard DeGroot son of Carl Everett and Maude Alice Maxon DeGroot was born Feb. 14, 1923 at Shoshoni and passed away Sunday, Oct. 14, 1984 in the Veterans Hospital in Hot Springs, S. Dak.

The family moved to Lusk in 1925 where Val spent his youth. He graduated from Lusk High School in 1941 and is a veteran of World War II, having served with the 4000th Army Air Force unit based in Toledo, Ohio. He began his training for certified public accountancy at Barnes Business College in Denver, transferring to the University of Illinois at Champagne - Urbana, Ill. He also attended the University of Tulsa, Tulsa, Okla., and completed his studying at the University of Texas, in Austin.

He successfully completed the Texas CPA exam and was awarded a certificate to practice as a certified public accountant. He was employed as an auditor for Universal Petroleum Company and Douglas Aircraft, Inc., both in Tulsa, Okla. Prior to returning to Lusk, he was associated with Peat-Marwick in Dallas. In 1958, he returned to Lusk and opened offices in Lusk and Hot Springs, S. Dak. He closed the Lusk office in 1970 and has since made his home in Hot Springs, S. Dak.

On May 1, 1962, he married Jackie Schimke at Tonnawanda, New York. They became the parents of a son, Donald Clark, who is a senior at Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Mich., majoring in electronic engineering.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers. Survivors include his son, Donald of Berrien Springs, Mich., two sisters, Ada Vogel, Lusk and Phyllis Manning of Arlington, Texas, one brother, John A. DeGroot of Denver, numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Peet Mortuary Chapel in Lusk Thursday, Oct. 18, at 2 p.m.

Officiating will be Rev. Roy Howell. Music will be provided by Minerva Watson, organist and Mark Lohr will sing "How Great Thou Art", "The Old Rugged Cross", and "The Lord's Prayer."

Active pallbearers will be Vern Modine, Otto Krekeler, George Dixon, Dean Brooks, Richard Schnorenberg and Walt Fernau.

Interment will be at Lusk Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Congregational Church Organ Fund to Senior Citizen's Center.

Arrangements were by the Peet Mortuary.
