Sylvia Hammell

Sylvia Hammell, age 81, of Newcastle passed away on Saturday afternoon at the Rapid City Regional Hospital. Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk, with pastor Delbert Dick officiating. Interment followed in the Lusk Cemetery.

Sylvia was born Feb. 1, 1919, to Peter J. and Flossie Bristow Peterson near Burdock, S.D. Her father homesteaded near the Mule Creek Oil Field in the spring of 1919. She started school in Wyoming but soon relocated to a farm near Burdock, S.D., in November of 1925. She attended school in Argentine, S.D., through the eighth grade and graduated from Edgemont High School in 1937.

She married Harold Hammell on Aug. 8, 1939, in Newcastle. She remained on the ranch until 1996 when she retired and moved to Newcastle.

She was a member of the Homemakers Club, Sportsman's Club, and a Bible Study group. She also attended local church gatherings at neighbor's home.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, eight brothers (one in infancy), three sisters (two in infancy), and her husband Harold on Aug. 18, 1970.

She is survived by her daughters; Karen Morris of Casper, Shirley and her husband Les Marty of Newcastle, and Bonnie Hammell and her friend Mike Rowe of Rapid City; one son Mickey and wife Joyce of Casper; five grandchildren, Fern and Cody Morris, Clint and Hank Hammell and Zane Marty; two great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter; four sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial has been established at Michael's Senior Center, 121 W. Main, Newcastle, WY 82701.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk is in charge of the arrangements.
