Leonard Heine Area Pioneer Dies at Age 93
A Lusk area pioneer, Leonard Heine, died January 2 at the Michael Manor Nursing Home in Douglas at the age of 93.
Rosary was recited at the Peet Chapel Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Mass was read Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church by Father Colm Woods. Organist was Mrs. Bob Glenn who accompanied Mrs. James Willson as she sang "Rock of Ages" and "How Great Thou Art."
Casket bearers were Mr. Heine's grandsons, Royce Heine, Larry Hunt, Warren Manning, Steven Hunt, David Birch and Duaine Heine. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.
Leonard John Heine was born April 16, 1880, in Germany and came to America with his family at the age of one year. He was reared in Fremont, Neb., and worked on the Chicago and North Western Railroad there as well as working as a mason and in a mattress factory before coming to Wyoming.
He homesteaded near Jireh October 30, 1907, and married Winona Pearl Whitehill July 12, 1912, in Shenandoah, Iowa. As a young man he worked on various ranches in the Manville and Keeline area. For a time he owned a freight wagon and horses and did freighting from Manville to Lance Creek. Later he again worked for the Chicago and North Western.
Mr. Heine served as a member of the school board of District No. 8 at Jireh for many years.
