George Donald Harkin

George Donald Harkin was born Nov. 23, 1913, in Sheldon, Iowa. He was one of 15 children. At age 16, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served with them for three years.

At age 21, he married Blanche Main in Alliance, Neb. They made their home there for the next 20 years and raised their three sons; Donald I. Harkin of Japan, Gail L. Harkin of Longmont, Colo., and Bernard E. Harkin of Costa Mesa, Calif.

During most of his working years, his occupation was in the dairy industry. He held positions in Alliance and Mitchell, Neb., and Denver, Colo. In 1965, he left the dairy industry and began his own business - first in Louisville, Colo., and then in Crawford, Neb. He built, owned and managed the Sno White Laundramat until 1983.

On Dec. 22, 1984, he married Gertrude (Gertie) Quintard. They spent their married years living in both Crawford and Harrison; most recently living only in Harrison.

He was very active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles, having been a past president in the Alliance chapter and a charter member of the Crawford chapter.

For the past six years, he has been battling Lou Gehrig's Disease and the past few months his health had degenerated rapidly. Even during those trying times, he still had a smile and a friendly "hello."

He leaves behind a legacy of family and friends and a treasury of memories. He had the rare experience of having two families in his life. Both families loved him equally. He died July 2, 1991, at the Crawford Hospital. He will be missed.

Besides his sons and wife, his survivors include brothers Leo and Bernie Harkin of South Dakota, Jack Harkin of Oregon and Ed Harkin of San Diego, and sisters Edyth Kurschner of Colorado and Lenore Ingwerson of Ainsworth, Neb.

Of the eons that we could have lived, we are most fortunate to share the same time with Don Harkin.

He was a gentle man, a good husband, father, stepfather, brother and above all a true friend.

His life has made a difference in all of us.

Just as his being brought us all together, his passing has brought us all closer.

We say goodbye for now, but thank you for allowing us to share your life.

We shall always carry your memory with us; your love will be passed on to those we love. You will live on eternally through the love you kindled in all you knew.

May wings of Angels speed you to your rest.

Your family
