Verla D. Emery

Verla D. Emery, 93, of Grants Pass, Ore., passed away May 20, 2006, at her home.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. June 10, at Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church. There was a private cremation service held at a later date.

She was born in Harrison, Neb., on July 22, 1912, to Edward and Sadie Meier. She went to school first grade through 12th grade in Harrison. In May 1929 she married Roy S. Emery in Douglas. When their children were growing up Roy taught school in the rural area around Harrison, Bushnel, Neb., Hawk Springs and Guernsey.

Verla attended Chadron Normal College in Chadron and became an elementary School teacher. In 1941 she and Roy moved to California. Roy worked in a plane factory and Verla worked as a clerical worker at California State Adult and Family Services for many years.

In 1969 they moved to Grants Pass, Ore., from Cupertine, Calif. During the three years they returned to Harrison to help care for Verla's mother.

Verla was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and enjoyed the Rogue Valley China Painters. She enjoyed painting, rock collecting, reading, horses and horseback riding. She loved her family a great deal.

Survivors include a son, Maurice A. Emery of Grants Pass; Lila Brackeen of Stonewall, Okla., 9 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 7 great-great grandchildren.

A son, Quenten L. Emery died in 1987. Her husband Roy, her parents, brothers Virgil Meiers of Harrison, Melvin (Pete) of Lusk, preceded her in death.

Other survivors are Mrs. Melvin Meier of Lusk and family, brother-in-law, Woodrow Emery, 93, Lily and family, San Diego, sister-in-law Marjorie Emery of Alliance. Niece, Artyce Krug and family of Torrington.
