Harry Joseph Baker

Harry Joseph Baker, 90, of Lusk, died Monday Aug. 21, 2006, at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, Nebraska. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk, with Reverend Delbert Dick officiating. Pallbearers will be Will Crofutt, Ty Baker, Chris Gilbert, Kurt Gaukel, Scott Ross, and Neal Wurdeman. Interment will be at the Lusk Cemetery.

Harry Baker was born Sept. 18, 1915 on Hog Thief Island, Mo. to Cora Perkins Baker and George Calvin Baker. He graduated from 8th grade. In 1933 he was in Civilian Conservation Camp. In 1935 he hitched a train to Wyoming to file a homestead north of Lance Creek. He hired on at Fay Nern's family ranch. On Dec. 18, 1945, Faye Nern and Harry were married in Lusk. They lived on the Kitchen Place until 1955 when they purchased the Crofutt Ranch and later the Hale's Place. Harry drove school bus for 23 years.

He was a member of NFO and was on the Niobrara Senior Center Board of Directors. He loved to go to auctions - cattle, antique, and junk.

Survivors include Faye, his wife of 60 years; two daughters, Shirlee Crofutt and husband Glenn of Thermopolis and Jean Zerbe and her husband Rick of Lusk; one son, Dick Baker and his wife Connie; 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, nine great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and all nine siblings, George and wife Hazel Baker, Roy and wife Ferol Baker, Guy and wife Ardis Baker, Willie Baker, Fred Baker, Harriet and husband Earl Slagle, Emily Sheldon, Bessie and husband Sid Tincher, and Stella and husband Bill Kenton.

The family suggests memorials to the Niobrara Senior Center in Lusk.
