Niobrara's oldest citizen dies Feb. 22

John Alter, 101, resident of this community for 81 years, died Feb. 22 at the Niobrara Nursing Home where he had made his home since he was 96. He observed his 101 birthday there in December.

John Francis Alter was born on December 23, 1881, in Wayland, Iowa, where he grew to manhood.

He came to Lusk in March of 1902. He was engaged in many lines of occupation until he settled on his homestead two miles northwest of Lusk. He and Louise Lipka of Juneau, Wis., were married in Chadron, Neb., in March of 1914. The couple lived on the ranch for 25 years where they raised sheep and dairy cattle.

Three children were born to the, a son Delmar Alter now of Lusk, two daughters, Wyome Bourret of Lusk and Avanell Hodgson of Boulder, Colo.

In 1940 the Family moved to Lusk where Mrs. Alter died in 1945.

John became interested in the study and collecting of rocks and made this his hobby and business for 25 years.

John Alter who had been a resident of this community for 81 years prior to his death was the oldest person in the county.

The Rev. Frank Blish officiated at the Feb. 24 memorial service held at Peet Mortuary Chapel. Music was provided by Minerva Watson, organist, and James Wilson who sang "Sweet By and By" and "Springtime in the Rockies."

Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery. Pallbearers were George Jugler, H.E. Hansen, Jack Larsen, Art Vireck, Charles Heumier, and Graydon Hoblit. Honorary bearers were Cal Fager, Andy McMaster, Martin Glandt, Roy Turnbull, Everette Brooks, John Goddard, Roger Scott, Eric Mosher, and Tom Howe.

Besides his children he is survived by 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
