Clair Lee, 82, Well Known Horseman Dies

Funeral service for Clair Lee, 82, was held at the Peet Chapel Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with Dallas Swisher, Casper, conducting the service. Donna Mahnke and Doris Mahnke sang "Jehovah Is My Shepherd" and "Home On The Range" accompanied by Mrs. Edna DeCastro, organist.

Casket bearers were Art Mahnke, Roger Bonsell, Steve Lee, Lynard Gladson, Milton Himes and John Miller. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery with Military Honors by Wieten Dupes Legion Post No. 4 of Lusk.

Clair Lee, son of Orin and Martha Knight Lee, was born September 25, 1890, at Bonesteal, S. D. He moved to Wyoming in 1908 and homesteaded in the Keeline area in 1919. He enlisted in the Army at Lusk in 1917 and served with the First Cavalry Division, transferring to the Field Artillery in France during World War I.

Mr. Lee was well known for his horsemanship. He broke horses for the cavalry and won the First Cavalry championship. He was a Wyoming state champion bronc rider. Mr. Lee is listed in the Cowboy Hall of Fame at Ogallala, Neb.

He worked for 13 years in various Wyoming counties as a government hunter and ranched in the Powder River and Keeline areas.

He married Laura Elizabeth Grammar in 1921 at Lusk and she died in April 1963.

Survivors include three children, Donald R., Sundance, Clair E., Salt Lake City, Utah, and Bonnie Wade, Lusk. He is also survived by seven brothers and sisters, Mrs. Bob (Ethel) Morton, Riverton, Legrand (Dick) Lee, Lusk, Enos Lee, Manville, Mrs. Winnie Hampton, Twin Falls, Idaho, Mrs. Joe (Nell) Jardine, North Highland, Calif., Mrs. Dutch (Roma) Burd, Elma, Wash., and Tom Lee, Olympia, Wash.; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

His wife, a son, Edward F. Lee, killed in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium during World War II, two brothers and a sister died previously.
