Marie Martin dies at Crawford

Marie Heckert Martin, 71, died at Ponderosa Villa in Crawford on Jan. 14. The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at Memorial United Methodist Church at Harrison.

The Rev. Wayne Tieszen officiated. Mrs. Dorothy Todd was organist and accompanied Mrs. Tieszen in singing "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Pallbearers were Ron Heckert, Harrison; Robert Heckert, Englewood, Colo.; Edward Heckert, Scottsbluff; Charles Heckert, Douglas, Wyo.; Lee Gorsuch, Douglas; and Donald Heckert, Van Tassell, Wyo. Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Martin was born in Streeter, Ill., on Nov. 21, 1904. As a small child she lived in Illinois and Minnesota. Her father filed on a homestead in Niobrara County north of Van Tassell in the fall of 1909 and the family joined him in the spring of 1910.

Marie married Frank I. Martin in December of 1940. They lived on a ranch south west of Van Tassell until 1943. Two children were born, a daughter, Joanne, and a son who died shortly after birth.

They sold the ranch and moved to Van Tassell in September of 1943. There they owned and operated a filling station and store. Frank died in October of 1953 and Marie kept the business until 1955. During Joanne's high school days her mother lived in Lusk, but she moved to Van Tassell again until 1973, then moved to Harrison for several months before moving permanently to the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her parents, 6 brothers, her husband and the infant son. Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Darold Abel and their daughters Anita and Lynn of Harrison; one sister, Mrs. Howard (Gladys) Michael of Beverton, Ore.; three brothers Wayne Heckert of Douglas, Wyo., Ray Heckert of Mesa, Ariz., and Walter Heckert of Tiro, Ohio.
