Melvin E. (Pete) Meier

Services for Melvin E. "Pete" Meier, 86, were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb.2, 2002, at St Leo's Catholic Church by Father Patrick Shea. He died Jan. 29, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Converse County in Douglas.

He was born on May 30, 1915, in Harrison, Neb., the son of Edward G. and Sadie (Grimm) Meier.

He was raised and attended school in Harrison. After graduation in 1933, he worked on ranches in Idaho, as a mechanic and automobile salesman in Crawford, Neb., and later for his father as a Chevrolet dealer.

He married Dorothy M. Jordan on June 17, 1940, in Crawford. For the next 13 years they lived in Harrison, where they owned and operated a grocery store and a movie theater.

In 1953 they moved to Lusk, where they purchased the Wyoming Theater and built the Lusk Drive-In-Theater. In 1962 they built and operated Bluebird Bowling Lanes and later the Meier Trailer Court and campground.

After selling their various businesses, they retired in 1978. In retirement Pete purchased and remodeled several houses for resale.

Pete enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golf, particularly when in the company of his longtime buddy, Herb Klindt.

Pete and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and spending the winters with their daughter, Ardis, in Arizona, California, Texas and Virginia.

He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, the Benevolent Order of Elks and the Niobrara Country Club of Lusk.

Survivors include his wife of Lusk; a sister Verla Emery of Grants Pass, Ore., two daughters, Glennis A. Torpey and husband Tom, Col. Ardis J. Meier and husband Jim Cerha of Washington, D.C.; one son, Dennis C. Meier and wife Cathy of Lusk; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Virgil Meier and a daughter Rhonda Lee.

Arrangements were handled by Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home of Lusk. Memorials may be made to the Niobrara County Library.
