Last Rites Held for Virgil Meier

Funeral services were held November 17 for Virgil Meier, a long time business man of Harrison.

Funeral service was held in the Redeemer Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. with the Pastor Thomas C. Jacobsen officiating. Pallbearers were Ted Tipton, Dick Herren, Aldoph Zurcher, Glenn Fitch, Richard Marsteller, and L. E. Barcus, with Alphonse (Blackie) Donahue as alternate. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Parsons, T. M. Powell, Luther Koch, Les DeKay, J. A. McClary, Frank Hoyt, Johnny Bourret, Rudy Hartman, Lou Sherrill, Ray York and Ord Anstey.

Virgil Wendell George Meier, son of Edward and Sadie Meier, was born December 22, 1913, at Harrison. He grew up here and attended public schools and graduated from Sioux County High School in 1931.He worked with his father in the Meier Chevrolet Garage, except for some time spent working in defense industries in California during World War II. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of sergeant while serving in the European Theater.

After the war he returned to Harrison, first working with his father, and then operating the family business after his father's death in December 1956.

He retired from active business in 1970 and pursued his hobbies of rock collecting, Lapidary work and finishing until his death of a heart attack at Chadron Hospital on November 14.

He leaves his mother, Sadie Meier of Harrison; his brother Melvin E. "Pete" Meier of Lusk, Wyo., his sister, Verla D. Emery of Grants Pass, Ore.
