Jacob 'Jack' Nein

The Rev. Jacob (Jack) Nein who served the Lusk Congregational Church from May 1951 to January 1961 died at his home in Fort Collins, Colo., May 8.

He brought a unique ministry to the Lusk church having been born in Russia, the son of German immigrants who had farmed for the Russians. His father had brought the family to the United States in 1906 settling first at Lincoln, Neb., and later moving to Colorado. He wife, Betty, had a similar background, but was born in this country.

He was schooled at the Yankton (S.D.) College and School of Theology, and held pastorates in South Dakota before returning to Fort Collins to serve the German Congregational Church where he delivered sermons each Sunday in both German and English. In the later years of his Lusk ministry he also taught German in the high school and in both church and teaching endeavors was very popular among young people.

The construction of the north addition to the church and the installing of an electronic organ were accomplished during his ministry, and Rev. Nein being a fine craftsman, built the cross that still hangs at the front of the sanctuary, as well as other furniture and worship centers for the Sunday school.

While here, he spent one summer at the University of Wyoming to meet educational requirements. As a result of his teaching, in 1960 he was one of 78 persons selected by the U. S. Department of Education to attend an eight-week seminar in Germany.

He took the ministry of the new Congregational Church in Casper upon leaving Lusk, then served pastorates in South Dakota, Billings, Mont., and Lincoln, Neb., before returning to Colorado to retire. His wife Betty died in 1982 after being an invalid a number of years.

In more recent years he married Mildred Jolly who had helped the family during Mrs. Nein's illness. She survives as do two daughters, Helen Fisher and Bernadette Easley, both of Fort Collins. Last rites were held Friday, May 10, 1991, at the Warren Bohlender Funeral Home with burial at the Fort Collin's Cemetery.
