Burial in Lingle for long-time area resident

Funeral service for Robert F. Newell, 85, who died in Niobrara Memorial Hospital October 19, was held in the Congregational Church last Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Robert Boutwell officiating. Mrs. Jane Bardo, organist, accompanied Tim Johnson as he sang "For the Beauty of the Earth" and "Thine is the Glory."

Casket bearers were J. W. Labertew, Lewis R. Howard, R. T. Barnette, Max Robinett, Jack Pugsley, and Gene Tyrrel. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery at Lingle.

Robert F. Newell was born February 28, 1890, at Spring Hill, Wyoming Territory, near Esterbrook, the only son of seven children born to John and Catherine Newell. He spent his youth on several ranches in the Laramie Peak area, and in Mitchell Valley, Neb. In 1916 he homesteaded at Moore Springs near Rawhide Buttes in Goshen County.

During World War I he served in the army at Fort Douglas, Utah. In 1934 he married Genevieve Ferguson. They had two boys, John Robert and Richard Eugene. He ranched on the original homestead until 1967 when he retired.

During his younger days he played the violin for community dances, and through the years wrote many poems and stories. Many of these were about his family's early experiences in Wyoming. One of his favorites was to retell how his family traveled by covered wagon to visit relatives in Iowa the year he was ten.

Mr. Newell is survived by a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Howard of Torrington; one son John Robert Newell and three grandchildren, Anne, Sarah and Steven of Renton, Wash. He was preceded in death by his son Richard in 1958.
