Catherine "Kay" Stiles Newell
Catherine "Kay" Stiles Newell was born on April 25, 1936 in Lusk, Wyoming to the late Henry and Irene Stiles. She died Saturday March 6, 1999 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, Washington. She was 62.
Kay grew up in the oil field community of Lance Creek, Wyoming. She attended schools in Lance Creek and Lusk and graduated from Lusk High School in 1954. She attended Radcliff College in Cambridge, Massachusetts and the University of Wyoming at Laramie where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in English.
Kay married Bob Newell of Moore Springs on December 21, 1958 in Lance Creek. They lived in Wyoming and West Germany before moving to Renton, Washington in 1964.
Kay's life-long passion was music; she began taking piano lessons when she was 4. She was the church organist at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Renton, Washington for nearly 30 years. Kay was a lover of all the arts and was a long time patron of many art groups in Seattle and Renton. Her other interests included reading, traveling, gardening, antiquing and storytelling and her dog J.D.
She was a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Renton and Eastern Star. She also served on the board of the Renton Youth Symphony.
Kay is survived by her husband Bob Newell of Renton, Washington; two daughters, Anne Jaggars of Kent, Washington and Sarah Newell of Seattle, Washington, one son, Steven Newell and his wife Laura of Renton, Washington; brother John Stiles and his wife Betty of Findlay, Ohio; Nephew David Stiles and his wife Sue of Westchester, Ohio; niece Janet Stiles of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Melissa, Nicholas, and Leah; and grandnephews Grant and Zachary.
A memorial service was held Saturday, March 13, 1998 at 2 p.m. St Andrew Presbyterian Church in Renton, Washington.
Memorials may be made to the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 3604 NE 10th Court, Renton, WA 98055.
