Ray Owens

Services for Ray Owens were held November 27, 1987 at Peet Mortuary Chapel. Rev. Frank Bozart officiated. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mr. Owens died Sunday, November 22, 1987 at the Niobrara Memorial Hospital. He was born May 21, 1900, in Lincoln, NE, the son of Alfanso and Mae Owens. He served his country in World War I with the Rainbow Division in France. After his discharge he settled in Western Nebraska. He married Viola Wood and to this union three children were born.

On March 13, 1941 he was united in marriage to Pearl Strait in Plattsmouth, NE and to this union two children were born.

In 1953 he moved his family to Lusk where he began working for Niobrara County School District driving the Lance Creek school bus to Lusk. Later he worked as a custodian at the High School where he left behind fond memories of the staff and students.

In 1961 they bought Vic's Drive Inn. He later worked for the Town of Lusk as a caretaker for the cemetery and the city parks until retiring in 1982. Mr. and Mrs. Owens spent several winters in California and Nevada.

The past several years, being unable to do much, he enjoyed the outdoors, his family and especially all his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Larry Ray, who died serving his country in Viet Nam in 1969 while a member of the U. S. Navy Seabees.

Survivors include: his wife Pearl of Lusk; a son and daughter-in-law Donald Roy and Carol of Bath, ME; one son Raymond Henry of Haigler, NE; two daughters and son-in-laws Leatta Mae and Jim Fuller of Craig, CO and Lola Mae and Denny Dobson of Lusk; 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials to the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital would be appreciated by the family.
