Sammy M. Porter

Services for Sammy M. Porter, 65, of Kearney, Neb., were held Wednesday, Oct. 2, 1991, at Zion Lutheran Church in Kearney with the Rev. Donald Pohlers officiating. Burial was at Kearney Cemetery.

Porter died Sept. 30, 1991, at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln, where he had been a patient for two days.

He was born Nov. 15, 1925, in Lusk, Wyo., to Roy H. and Florence Ann (Main) Porter. He graduated from Niobrara County High School and obtained his bachelor's degree from Kearney State College and his master degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He obtained the professional designations of chartered life underwriter and chartered financial consultant. He served in the U. S Army in World War II from 1944 to 1946.

He married L. Jean Bartels on July 31, 1949, in Campbell.

He was a resident of Kearney for 31 years, where he was a general agent for Guarantee Mutual Life Co. He retired Jan. 1, 1991.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Central Nebraska Life Underwriters, Central Nebraska Senior Golf Association, Nebraska Association of Life Underwriters, Kearney VFW Post No. 759 and American Legion Post No. 59.

Survivors include his wife, Jean, of Kearney; daughters, Pam Patterson, Loomis and Kristy J. Porter, Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Eileen Ellis, Edgemont, S.D.; and brothers, H. Max Porter, Crawford and R. L. "Beeb" Porter, Crawford; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials are planned to the Sam Porter Memorial Scholarship Fund or the Zion Lutheran Church.
