Joe Steven Reed

Funeral services for Joe Reed, 76, of Belle Fourche, S.D. were held Wednesday, Sept. 24, 1986 at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish. The Rev. Ren Adams of Moorcroft, WY officiated with burial following in the Pine Slope Cemetery, Belle Fourche.

Reed died Sunday, Sept. 21, 1986 at Belle Fourche Health Care Center. A memorial has been established by the family for research on polmyosis.

Mr. Reed's nephews were casket bearers, including Bebe Reed, Bud Reed, Jim Reed, Tom Reed, Walter Reed and Charlie Thomas. All friends are considered honorary casketbearers.

Joe Steven Reed was born March 26, 1910 at Harrison, NE, the son of Walter and Effie (Stevens) Reed. The family moved to the Lusk area when Joe was two years old. He attended school at Lusk and Douglas, graduating from Douglas in 1926 where he played football and basketball. He attended the University of Wyoming and ranched in eastern Wyoming.

Reed was married May 11, 1938 at Hot Springs to Deryce Lawler and the couple lived at Lance Creek where he worked for the Argo Oil Company until 1942. He lived in Canada for a year, working on the Alcan Highway before returning to the Lusk area to raise livestock.

The couple ranched for nine years at Ekalaka, MT. and for 10 years near Watford City, ND. He retired from ranching in 1969 and moved to Belle Fourche.

Reed is survived by his wife, Deryce of Belle Fourche; a daughter, Joann Struthers, Elk Groove Village, IL; a son, Steven Reed, Moorcroft, WY three grandchildren and a sister, Faye Russell, Cheyenne.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Frankie Hern, and four brothers, Walter, Asa, James and Ray.
