Benjamin A. Root
Benjamin A. Root was born in Royalton, Vt., April 23, 1842. He passed out of this life May 23,1918, being at that time aged 76 years and one month.
He served in the Civil War from 1861 to 1864. December 1, 1864 he was united in marriage to Miss Sarah J. Baker, and of the union five children were born, four of whom beside his widow, survive him as follows: Fred A., Cora L. Bell, Mrs. Lena B. Jones, and Arthur H. Of grandchildren there are nine, all living in this community except Lionel Bell who is serving in our army in France.
December 1, 1914, Mr. and Mrs. Root celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by their children and many friends. In 1878 they moved from Vermont to Iowa, from there they moved to Nebraska and in 1887 they came to Wyoming, making their home among the early settlers of the state where they have ever since resided.
Judge Root, as he was familiarly called, served as justice of the peace in this town for some 15 years.
We know that he will be missed by his own loved ones but he will likewise be missed by the entire community of which he was so long a resident. His gentile smile, his kindly word and his cordial handshake will long be remembered by those that knew him.
Funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the congregational church, conducted by Rev. O. E.A. Blenkarn. A large concourse of friends were present, testifying to the high esteem in which he was held. Many were unable to accompany the remains to Lusk Cemetery on account of a heavy rain and electrical storm.
The following were the pallbearers: Jim Mashek, Lee Miller, H.H. Roberts, T.L. Thompson, J.E. Mayes and J.L. Hall.
