Accident claims two lives here

A one-car accident nine-and-a-half miles east of Lusk on U.S. Highway 20 last Wednesday, May 17, claimed the lives of two Crawford, Neb., people.

According to investigating officer Jay Gruwell of the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Janelle J. Serres, 35, was westbound on U.S. 20 at about 5 p.m., when her 1979 Chevrolet Chevette four-door hatchback left the right side of the road. She apparently over-corrected in trying to get it back on the road, causing the vehicle to roll three times, according to state police reports.

Both Serres and a passenger, Mark F. Dirks, 33, were thrown from the car.

Serres died at the scene of head, neck and chest injuries. Dirks died about two hours later at Niobrara County Memorial Hospital of head and chest injuries.

Neither was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident, according to investigators.

State police reports indicate Dirks had asked Serres for a ride to Lusk, when he found out she was coming this way. Serres was reportedly coming to Lusk to see her daughter, Brenda Serres, graduate from Niobrara County High School on Sunday.
