James "Allen" Sheridan

Rosary services for James "Allen" Sheridan, 89, were Monday at the Peet Mortuary Chapel in Lusk. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning at Peet Mortuary with Rev. Tony Jablonwski officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mr. Sheridan died early Saturday morning, Jan. 10, 1987, at the Niobrara County Memorial Nursing Home in Lusk. He was born April 10, 1897 in Sisterville, WV, the son of Joe and Mary Sheridan. He was educated in Lincoln, NE. At the age of 17 he moved to Lusk with his mother and two sisters by means of a four wheel buggy and pony.

He served in World War I, after his discharge he filed on a homestead 21 miles north of Lusk, which is still part of the Goddard-Sheridan Ranch.

In 1919, Mr. Sheridan became a stepbrother to John Goddard after his mother married Daniel E. Goddard.

One of his many interests was raising Thoroughbred horses, breaking 10-12 colts a year to ride. One of his great loves was to go elk hunting every fall, something he did until his age prevented it. He also played at many barn dances in the community with his fiddle and saxophone. He was an avid baseball player in his younger years and was a great fan in his later years.

He lived with John and Evelyn Goddard at the ranch north of Lusk until entering the nursing home in December 1985.

Survivors include one sister, Helna Wilson of VanCouver, WA; one step-brother, John Goddard of Lusk; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials can be sent to the family, who will donate the funds to the Niobrara County Memorial Nursing Home for equipment purchases.

Peet Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
