Cory Alen Smith

Funeral services for Cory Alen Smith, age 16, were held May 4, at the multi-purpose building of the Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds, with Glenn Thompson officiating. Interment services were at Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Cory died April 29, at Deaconess Hospital in Great Falls after a car accident, which occurred the day before.

Cory was born in Helena on Oct. 11, 1977, to Alen and Tessi Smith. He was active in many sports including football, baseball, wrestling, rodeo, hunting and fishing. His favorite was rodeo which he dreamed of doing since he was a toddler. He belonged to the high school rodeo club and participated in bareback bronc riding, bull dogging and team roping with his father.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Len Oliver.

Survivors include his parents, Alen and Tessie Smith; grandparents Everett and Ada Smith and Anna May Oliver, all of Helena; great grandmother, Ida Jones, of Deer Lodge; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends.

Cory will be greatly missed by everyone whose life he touched. His memory will live on in our hearts.

The family prefers memorials to the Cory Alen Smith High School Rodeo Memorial Fund, in care of Norwest Bank, 350 N. Last Chance Gulch, Helena, MT 59601.

This obituary was entered as printed. However, the library was notified on 12/10/08 that the death date in this obituary is incorrect. The Montana Death Index, accessed through Ancestry.com, states the death date as April 15, 1994. Chloe M. Katsilas sent us the funeral program and obituary from a Montana newpaper, which is below. Both of these also indicate the date as April 15.

Cory Alen Smith, 16, of 676 Star Road, died early Friday morning at Deaconess Hospital in Great Falls after a tragic car accident, which occurred the day before.

Cory was born in Helena on Oct. 11, 1977, to Alen and Tessi Smith. He was active in many sports, including football, baseball, wrestling, rodeo, hunting and fishing. His favorite was rodeo, which he dreamed of doing since he was a toddler. He belonged to the high school rodeo club and participated in bareback bronc riding, bull dogging and team roping with his father.

Cory was deeply loved by his large family and many friends. He treated everyone the same and was always quick with a friendly hello and a smile. It has been heard from people of all ages what a pleasure it was to be around Cory. He always lent a helping hand. He enjoyed life and loved to laugh, and he wasn't above pulling an innocent prank, mostly on the people he cared about.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Len Oliver.

Survivors include his parents, Alen and Tessie Smith; grandparents Everett and Ada Smith and Anna May Oliver, all of Helena; great grandmother, Ida Jones, of Deer Lodge; along with numerous aunts, uncles and cousins and many friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the multi-purpose building of the Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds, with Glenn Thompson officiating. Interment services will be at Sunset Memorial Gardnes Cemetery. Friends may pay their respects beginning at 3 p.m. today until 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hagler-Anderson Mortuary.
