Helen Elizabeth Ladwig Van Sickle

Helen Elizabeth Ladwig Van Sickle, 71, of Village Court, died on Wednesday, June 29, 2005 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. She was born in Niobrara County, Wyoming on February 21, 1934 and was the daughter of the late William Ladwig and the late Wilhelmina Glandt Ladwig. Helen was married to the late John Oliver VanTassel, the late J. M. VanSickle and J. Carroll Hortman.

A 1952 graduate of Niobrara County High School, she trained as a nurse at The University of Denver and St. Luke's Hospital in Denver and subsequently worked in several hospitals around the country, most recently Raleigh Community Hospital. Helen was a member of the Burlington Women's Club and was a lifelong member of the N.C. Zoo. She also volunteered at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, Alamance Regional Medical Center in Burlington for the American Cancer Society and for the N.C. Sea Turtle Project.

She is survived by her four children: Kathy Curtis of Burlington, John VanTassel and his wife Bonnie of Tallahassee, Fla.; Kris Lohr and her husband Larry of Liberty, N.C., and Kirah VanSickle and Steve Arcangeli of Carson City, Nev.; three step-children, Lee Hortman, Mark Hortman and Lisa Bean; grandsons Daniel, Michael, Matthew and John; sisters Ruth Drewry of Billings, Mont. and Lucille Orrett of Fremont, Calif.; and brothers Dick Ladwig of Lusk, Wyo. and Harold Ladwig of Douglas, Wyo. Her husbands John VanTassel and J. M. VanSickle and siblings Autumn, Madeline, Olga, Jim, Bill, Josephine and Delyda, preceded her in death.

The family will have a private memorial service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society, Alamance Regional Medical Arts Center, 1236 Huffman Mill Rd., Suite 1050, Burlington, N.C. 27215.
