Last Rites Held for "Check" Wasserburger

Mass of the Resurection was held at 9:00 a.m. on July 1 at the St. James Catholic Church in Edgemont, S.D. for J. Chester Wasserburger with Rev. James Tunnison as celebrant. Vincent Wasserburger was lector at the Mass with Wade and Wayne Wasserburger, Ardmore, and Wade and Ward Wasserburger, Edgemont as acolytes.

The St. James Church choir, led by Mrs. Betty Standem, sang "Faith of Our Fathers" and "Ave Maria." Casket bearers were Wayne Wasserburger, Warren Wasserburger, Dallas Wasserburger, Mark Hungerford, Andy Federle and Tom Porter.

Military rites were conducted at the gravesite. Interment was in the Montrose Cemetery.

Joseph Chester Wasserburger (better known as "Check") son of Henry and Mary Wasserburger, was born April 22, 1912 at Montrose. He attended the public schools in Montrose and Ardmore. On April 9, 1942 he married Betty McDerby of Harrison.

In 1912 he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II. Upon his return he moved to Edgemont where he went into hardware business. Later he built the Casino Lanes Bowling Alley which he managed until his death.

"Check" is survived by his wife Betty and three sons, Richard, Bakersfield, Calif., James, Denver, Colo., and David of Los Angeles, Calif.; two brothers, Harry and Martin both of Harrison; and two sisters, Blanche Daum, Los Angeles and Martella Hungerford, Alliance.
