Shippen Family Band - Music Makers of 1890's.  The Shippen Brothers Family Band was quite an organization made up of two fathers and their ten children.  They played at many events around the county.  Mrs. Jessie Baughn of Manville, fourth from the left, played alto horn, but was holding a cornet at the time the picture was taken.

Jessie Baughn, 80-year resident of Manville Area, Dies Sunday in Casper

Mrs. Jessie Baughn, 87, and an 80-year resident of the Manville area, died Sunday morning at the Natrona Memorial Hospital in Casper following an extended illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Manville Community Alliance Church with the Rev. Richard Korna officiating. Burial was in the Manville Cemetery family plot. Peet Mortuary of Lusk was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Richard Korns was organist and accompanied Mrs. Jack Hammond of Lance Creek, soloist as she sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross".

Casket Bearers were Zeb Ward, Harold Manorgan, Dick Lee, Alvin Alexander, Enos Lee and Charles Sheaman.

Mrs. Baughn was born May 14, 1881, in Superior, Nebr., to John and Clara Shippen, one of six children. When seven, she moved with her family to Wyoming where her father had a tree claim six miles south of Manville. The family lived here until 1890 when their home burned to the ground.

She married Carl W. Baughn, March 19, 1901, in Manville, and they were the parents of one son, Floyd C. who resides in Kaycee, Wyo. They ranched near Manville and later moved into Manville.

The Baughns were active in the Wyoming legislature, she serving for 14 sessions as keeper of the door of the senate chamber.

Despite her illness she made a special effort to vote this year and did so by absentee ballot.

The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1951.

Mrs. Baughn was always ready to help in case of sickness. She was a member of the Methodist Church, Royal Neighbors of America, Niobrara County Republican Women's Club and the National Federation of Republican Women.

She rode side saddle in the State Fair parade in Douglas for 56 years. She had been in poor health this past year and had been out of the hospital for three days when she made her final ride in the 1968 State Fair Parade in Douglas, August 31.

Survivors besides her son Floyd are one sister, Mrs. Mamie Rogers of Denver; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mr. Baughn died in 1955.
