Walter F. Zerbst

Funeral services for Walter F. Zerbst, 94, were held at 3 p.m. on May 21, at the Gorman Funeral Homes-Converse Chapel in Douglas with Pastor Tom Strock of the First Baptist Church of Lusk officiating.

Zerbst died May 16, 2005 at Michael Manor in Douglas.

He was born May 26, 1910 in Harrison, Neb., the son of Carl Frederick and Lottie Alma (Hill) Zerbst. He graduated from Sioux County High School in Harrison in 1929. He was married to Mildred Clara Meier on May 21, 1933, in Harrison. The couple ranched north and east of Lusk. As an area rancher he helped organize the Wyoming Farm Bureau Insurance and was an active member of the Niobrara County Farm Bureau and served as president. He was always supportive of the 4-H organization, and was active in the First Baptist Church in Lusk.

He was proud of his Hereford cattle and Quarter horses, and his second love was carpentry. He was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and horseman. He loved dancing a beautiful waltz with his loving wife and partner of 72 years. He retired in 1973, and moved to Lusk where he built a new home. In his retirement years he and his wife traveled many places, including Alaska. He will be remembered for always being a helping hand to his friends and neighbors.

He is survived by his wife Mildred C. Zerbst of Michael Manor in Douglas; three children, Melva and husband Leroy Christianson of Lusk, Delbert and wife, Linda Zerbst of Black Hawk, S.D., and Karlene Weeden of Lewistown, Mont.; nine grandchildren, Valerie Wasserburger, Kelly Christianson, Lori Milke, Curtiss Christianson, Douglas Zerbst, Kristal Kuhnel, Dennis Zerbst, Cheri Fulton and Monte Weeden; and 41 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mildred Lambert.

A memorial to the Niobrara County Library in Lusk would be appreciated by the family. Gorman Funeral Homes-Converse Chapel of Douglas was in charge of the arrangements.
