Olive Audrey Hanson ZumBrunnen

Funeral services for Olive ZumBrunnen were held Dec. 30, 1999, with Pastor Mark Lohr officiating. Interment followed in the Lusk Cemetery.

Olive ZumBrunnen died Dec. 28, 1999, in Colorado.

She was born on July 14, 1921, in Teepee, S.D., the daughter of Henrick and Roxie Hanson.

Olive attended the Roxson School in northern Niobrara County, a country school that was relocated several times. She attended high school in Newcastle, graduating in the spring of 1931 at age 16. Being too young to teach, she stayed in Newcastle for a fifth year called Normal Training for Teachers. She attended summer schools at University of Wyoming, Black Hills Teacher College and Brigham Young University.

She taught school at country schools in Weston County for four years and then at Hat Creek for one and a half years.

On Feb. 2, 1938 she married Leslie L. ZumBrunnen, of the Kirtley community. In 1941, they bought the ranch in the Hat Creek Breaks from the Bruch family.

In 1945 Leslie and Olive became one of the founding families of the Niobrara County Farm Bureau. In 1949 Leslie and Olive became involved in the 4-H program, serving in many capacities until their retirement.

She was a 50-year member of Eastern Star, a member of Daughters of the Nile, and was Past Guardian of Job's Daughters Bethel 10. She belonged to Lusk Business and Professional Women's Club, Garden Club, the Divide Tumbleweed Women's Club, Indian Creek Women's Club, Niobrara Cow Bells and the Niobrara County Republican Women's Club. She became a member of the First Baptist Church in 1934.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leslie and one brother Floyd.

She is survived by her daughter Katherine McDaniel of Littleton, Colo.; a son Melvin ZumBrunnen of Lusk; six grandchildren: Mardee Aanonsen of Laramie; Julie Branting of Thornton, Colo.; Leslie ZumBrunnen of Littleton, Colo.; Teri Whitman of Dayton, Minn.; Clint ZumBrunnen of Del Rio, Texas; and Jason ZumBrunnen of Laramie; and four great-grandchildren: Meghan and Missy Aanonsen, Ryan and Rachel ZumBrunnen. She is also survived by a brother Glenn Hanson of the Cheyenne River community.

The family asks memorials be made to the Niobrara County 4-H Council.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
