Charles M. Swope Services Conducted Here Saturday

Funeral services for Charles Marion Swope, 80, were conducted from the Peet Mortuary on Saturday afternoon, March 18.

Rev. Clyde Hampton, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated and following the services here the remains were taken to Crawford, Neb., and interment was made in the cemetery there, where his wife is buried.

Mr. Swope had been a resident of the Whitman community for more than thirty years, where he had been engaged in ranching and farming.

He was born in Peoria, Ill., August 16, 1863, being 80 years, 6 months and 29 days old at the time of his death.

He was united in marriage to Mattie Jane Smith in Nemaha, Nebr., and seven children were born to this union.

In 1907 the family moved to Crawford, Neb., by wagon train and in 1910 they homesteaded in Wyoming, just over the Wyoming-Nebraska State line, and later became known as the Whitman community. It was here Mr. Swope lived until his death, making his home with his son Fay and family. He passed away March 14, 1944, death being attributed to infirmities of his advanced age.

Surviving him are four sons, John and Fay of Whitman; Walter of Leverett; Lee of Centralia, Wash.; and two daughters, Cora Leeling of Flattop and Velma Hamlin of St. Maries, Idaho. Three brothers, Walt of Kansas City, Kansas; Bill of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Lawrence of Omaha, Neb.; and one sister, Mrs. W. L. Mason of Cheyenne.
