Leo Wilson Murphy

Services for Leo Wilson Murphy, 73 of Casper, were held Saturday at Bustard Funeral Home in Casper. Pastor David Taylor of the Church of God of Prophecy officiated with burial following in the Lusk Cemetery.

Murphy died May 8, 1986 at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born Apr. 24, 1913 in Madison, NE, the son of Ira and Orilla (Tabler) Murphy. The family moved to a homestead near Jay Em, WY in 1916.

He was educated in several Wyoming and Nebraska schools. He returned to the Jay Em area to do farm work when he was 16. In 1934, Murphy married Hazel Valentine in Mullen, NE. They had seven sons.

Murphy worked in the oil fields about 30 years; working for Frank Gormann at Lance Creek; Wyoming Well Service and Bill Chapman in Edgerton. He retired in 1981 due to ill health.

In 1951, he married Geneva Wright Sheenan in Casper and lived in Edgerton where they raised chinchillas for 10 years. He was quite adept at welding and had made horse trailers, puzzles and other novelties from horseshoes and other metal pieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Temple Murphy; one sister, Fern Murphy Smith; one son, Dennis W., and one stepson, Francis L. Scheenan.

Besides his widow, he is survived by six sons, Merlin G. of Bar Nunn, M. Dean, Roger W. and Robert T., all of Casper, Donald K. of Rock Springs, and Raymond L. of Douglas; two stepsons, Carl A. and Tony Scheenan, both of Kimball, NE; one sister, Lola Mae Schaffert of Torrington; his stepmother, Florence Murphy of Casper; 24 grandchildren, eight step grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and four step great-grandchildren.

Memorials to the Central Wyoming Cancer Treatment Center and Hospice Program will be appreciated by the family.
