Earl P. Cherry, Sioux Pioneer, Dies Thursday

Funeral services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Federal Church in Mitchell for Earl P. Cherry Sr., 83, a pioneer resident of Mitchell and Sioux County, who died Thursday night at a hospital in Scottsbluff. The Rev. Wade H. Scott and the Rev. Lawrence Dry officiated.

He was born Aug. 11, 1878, in Ohio. At the age of three he moved with his parents to Kansas where he received his education. In 1898 he moved to Mitchell and Sioux County and took up homesteading and has remained since.

On Oct. 12, 1912 he was married to Grace E. Warren in Douglas County who preceded him in death. He is survived by two sons, Frank E. of Agate, and Earl P. Jr. of Mitchell, four grandchildren and one sister, Clementine V. Cherry of Kansas City, Mo.

Mr. Cherry was very active in all community betterment, was former Sioux County clerk and at present was a director of the First State Bank of Mitchell; a member of the American National Cattlemens Association, and the Nebraska Stock Growers Association. He was also a member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge and in 1959 received his 50 year pin.

Pallbearers were W. E. Mumby, Charles Karpf, Frank Lewis, Earl Hatch, Bill Huffman and Marquis Hughson. Organist was Mr. W. H. Parker. A quartet of Paul Kuxhausen, Leo Kuxhausen, Gayle Hall, and Henry Haven sang "Abide With Me", and "The Old Rugged Cross".
