Funeral services for Roger W. Bonsell, 89, of Lusk, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at the First Baptist Church in Lusk. Visitation will be at Pier Funeral Home Thur., Sept. 1, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Mr. Bonsell passed away peacefully Monday, Aug. 29, at Niobrara Health and Life Center in Lusk.
Roger William Bonsell was born on Aug. 31, 1921 in a log cabin in rural Niobrara County to William H. and Frances (Peake) Bonsell. Roger was raised on the OW Ranch north of Lusk along with his siblings, Donald, Miriam (Brott), and Eva Lou (Paris). He graduated from Lusk High School in 1940. Roger joined the Navy and proudly served his country during WWII from 1943-1946. Roger returned to the Lusk area to the profession he loved best - ranching with his father on the OW Ranch.
Roger married Beverly A. Walker on June 21, 1953. Roger continued ranching until 1965 when the couple moved to Lusk where he worked for the Town of Lusk and later for several local area ranchers. He retired from the Niobrara County School District in 1982.
Roger loved to hunt, fish, play card games and shoot pool. He enjoyed working in his woodshop making gifts for his family and friends. Dad was quick to laugh or lend a helping hand. An avid reader, he was the holder of the family history and a great story teller, providing those close to him with a wealth of local history and many good laughs. His sense of humor, honest character and kind nature will be missed by his family and friends. Roger was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion.
Roger dearly loved his wife of 58 years along their six children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, his son, William R., and two granddaughters, Chelsea, and Jenny Lewellyn. He is survived by his four sons and one daughter: Robert L. (Tammy), Lusk; Connie (Rick) Lewellyn, Wenatchee, Wash.; John ( Dana), Omaha, Neb.; Jim (Jessie), Lusk; Cory (Nancy), Omaha, Neb.; his seven grandchildren: Roger, Ben (Anne) Bonsell, Lusk; Jamie Lewellyn, Walla Walla, Wash.; Kadence (Wesley) Maier; Pullman, Wash., Amanda (Adam) Nielson, Omaha; Brandon and Austin Bonsell, Omaha; three great-grandchildren: Clayton, Summer and Samson, Lusk; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Friends of the Lusk Animal Shelter.
Pier Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
