Dick was born Jan. 20, 1922, to J.L. Pete and Mabel (Abley) Vondra of the Prairie Center Community. He was a farmer and rancher at heart. He worked at Holly Sugar for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He married Hazel Meacham during World War II while in the service. They were later divorced. He later married Ophelia Mac McCoy in 1961 and they made their home west of Torrington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepmother, Pearl; two brothers, Jim in 1939 and Kenneth Bud Vondra in 1994; three sisters, Dolly Gheen in 1967, Vivian Britton in 1989 and Esther Schloatman in 2005; two nephews, Billy and Jim Vondra; and a niece, Diana Schnornberg.
