Ruby C. Simon

TORRINGTON, WY-Funeral Mass of Christian Burial for Ruby C. Simon, 98, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2012 at St. Rose Catholic Church with The Reverend Father Kevin Koch officiating. Burial will be in the Lusk Cemetery in Lusk, Wyoming at 2pm. Ruby died July 24, 2012 in Longview, Texas. Memorials may be made to the Torrington Senior Center. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and a rosary will take place at the church at 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of the Colyer Funeral Home and friends may send condolences to the family at www.colyerfuneralhome.com.

Ruby was born Aug. 26, 1913 in Burwell, Neb. the daughter of Charles and Anna (Deafenbaugh) Gaukel. The family moved by covered wagon to Wyoming when she was one year old. They homesteaded in the Jireh community. She attended school in Jireh and worked various jobs through her teen years. In 1933 she married Melvin A. Nelson. They resided in Lance Creek where Melvin was employed in Carbon Black. In 1938 when that plant closed they moved to a farm near Keeline, Wyoming where they ranched and farmed until Melvin died in 1965. In 1968 she married Floyd Simon, a rancher south of Lusk, Wyoming. In 1975 they moved to Torrington, Wyo. where Floyd died in 1983. Ruby continued to live in Torrington until the fall of 2010.

Ruby was very active at the Senior Friendship Center, helping sew bonnets, rummage sales, and other things. She was also active at St. Rose Catholic Church. When Ruby was raising her children, she was active in the Keeline 5280 Club, a 4-H leader, and at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Lusk for many years. She enjoyed needlework, reading and gardening. She was a good cook and made great pies.

Ruby is survived by two daughters Yvonne Higgins of Longview, Texas, and Myrna Baker of Seal Beach, California; a son Derryl Nelson and his wife Janelle of Sweetwater, Texas; a sister Anna Nelson and her husband Linden of Torrington, Wyo.; ten grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; ten great-great grandchildren; a step-daughter LaVern (Floyd) of Seattle, Wash.; a step-son Russell (Millie) of Dacona, Colorado; six step-grandchildren; and ten step-great grandchildren. In addition to her husbands she was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; three sisters, two sons-in-law; and one grandson. The family wishes to acknowledge Patricia Ray of Longview, Texas, her caretaker her last days.
