Cathyrn "Carmen" Berta

Cathryn "Carmen" Berta, age 79, passed away Oct. 12, in St. George, Utah. She was born Dec. 24, 1924 in Casper to Lafe E. and Catherine Culver. Carmen married Oreste J. "Rusty" Berta in Rock Springs on June 12, 1943.

Carmen was raised in Rock Springs and graduated from high school in Lusk returning to Rock Springs after her marriage.

She was very active in the community, serving and volunteering for the Chamber of Commerce, PTA, Western Wyoming Community College, YWCA, the Garden Club and the Art Guild. Carmen was instrumental in organizing the Rock Springs Cultural Festival, and was the recipient of several community service awards. Carmen worked with her husband Rusty in building their business, City Auto Sales, and she owned and operated the "Now-n-Then" antique shop in Rock Springs and "Favorite Things" shop in Hurricane, Utah.

Carmen and Rusty spent many wonderful summers together with family and friends at their cabin on the Hoback Rim, and became "snowbirds" in 1982, spending winters in St. George.

Carmen loved nature, music, art, photography, gardening, reading, writing and traveling and her hobbies included collecting antiques, teddy bears and Native American art and artifacts.

She loved people, especially her grandkids and great grandkids and was a "second" mother and grandmother to many children and adults throughout her life. Carmen's laughter, love and joy brightened the lives of everyone lucky enough to have known her.

She is survived by her loving husband Rusty, and her daughters; Diana Georgis and husband Les Georgis of Denver, Colo., Wendy Sines and her husband Robert Sines of Oak Harbor, Wash. and Susan Berta and Howard Garrett of Greenbank, Wash.; her grandchildren Tony Georgis, Mandy Trolinger, Sheila Ker, Russell Horn, Austin and Dillon Sines, and great grandchildren Andrew and Alexis Ker, and by her sister Fern Peterson and brothers Lafe Jr., Aaron and Thomas Culver. Carmen was preceded in death by her daughter Janet Horn, mother and father Catherine and Lafe Culver, sister Paula Malmborg and brother Denis Culver.

Funeral services were held Oct. 16, at the Fox Funeral Home in Rock Springs, followed by private graveside services in Pinedale.
