“Amity” is a novel by author Nathan Harris. In 1864 enslaved siblings, Coleman and June, who had yet to get the freedom they had been promised, were separated. Coleman stayed in Louisiana with the Harper family while June was taken to Mexico by their master Mr. Harper. Soon a letter from Harper summons Coleman to Mexico. He goes willingly, but in Mexico he is forced to flee with Harper’s daughter into the desert to find Jane. The siblings soon learn that freedom isn’t always given – sometimes it has to be taken by force.
