Agent Moulton on his way back to Cheyenne said the escorted freight outfit arrived safely in Deadwood. He also tells us that because of the rush to Deadwood Gulch, Custer City is now almost deserted. A few months ago it had nearly 400 buildings, now hardly anyone is there, except for the continual turnover of Hillers, freighters and others who stop enroute north. In response to this move Voorhees is making plans to extend the stageline to Deadwood Gulch as soon as possible. After visiting Deadwood and Whitewood gulches, Moulton said, "about ten thousand men were working in them and he described Deadwood as bout 3 miles long and 50 feet wide".
