Frank R. Ellis Was Born Here

Funeral services for Frank R. Ellis, 72, were held at the Jones Funeral Home at Salmon, Idaho, on October 7 with the Rev. Theodore Cox of the Salmon Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in the Salmon Cemetery.

Mr. Ellis was found October 3 near Lowell, Idaho, where his truck had run off the road. He had died instantly of injuries while enroute to Kooskia, Idaho, to visit a brother, Lin Ellis.

He was born January 19, 1896, in Harrison, the son of Solomon and Anna Ellis. At the age of nine he lost his father, a surveyor who was killed by lightning. The family moved to Moscow, Idaho where Frank finished elementary school and was graduated from high school.

He then worked on cattle ranches in Eastern Wyoming and Western Nebraska before he entered the U.S. Army in 1917. He went overseas and served in France participating in the battle of the Meuse Argonne. He remained overseas and served in the Army of Occupation. He was a member of the American Legion.

In 1919 he was discharged and went to work for the Colorado National Bank traveling throughout the western states as a cattle inspector for the loan department.

In 1925 he homesteaded the first ranch below Ellis, Idaho, on the Salmon River. This ranch was sold to Charlie Vance in 1937.

He married Bessie Hutchison in 1937. He purchased a ranch on Carmen Creek where he made his home until the time of his death. This ranch is now owned by his son, Jack Ellis.

Survivors include his widow, Bessie; three sons, Jack of Carmen, Idaho, Richard of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robert Michael of Hood River, Ore.; five grandchildren; three brothers, Fred and Walter of Lewiston, Idaho, and Lin of Kooskia, Idaho; two half-brothers, John Wilson of Moses Lake, Wash., and Harold Wilson of Harrison.

Harold Wilson and daughter Nancy attended the services at Salmon.
