Betty May Sable

Longtime Wyoming native and Lander resident, Betty Jones Sable died on Dec. 4, 2005 at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander at the age of 82. Cremation has taken place and services will be held at a later date.

Betty was born to Oscar and Nellie (Lockett) Jones in Edgemont, South Dakota on May 28, 1923. She was educated in the Fairview Country School in Lance Creek. When her parents moved to Osage, Wyoming during World War II.

Betty attended and graduated from Newcastle, Wyoming. Betty married Jim Sable in Douglas, Wyo. on Nov. 13, 1942. To this union was born their son, Ted, who brought pride and joy into the young couple's lives.

Mrs. Sable was nationally known for her love and work in the State Snowmobile Association. She owned the very first snow mobile in Fremont County. Through her efforts she was the first person to open Yellowstone Park to winter use by planning a snowmobile trip to Old Faithful for New Years Eve. Charleton Heston and Charles Curalt attended one of these events. She worked tirelessly with the Wyoming Recreation Department to make snowmobiling in Wyoming what it is today. Betty received many awards for this endeavor, however being inducted into the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in Michigan, was one of her top honors.

She was an active member of ESA Sorority and went through the chairs in the Order of the Eastern Star. She also enjoyed square dancing.

Throughout her working career she was employed at Racy's Cleaners and the employment office. Her family described Betty as a very tiny lady with a giant capacity to live to the fullest, always enjoying herself and making sure others had as much fun.

Betty is survived by her husband Jim of 63 years, and her son Ted, both of Lander. A granddaughter, Cortni Ward of For Collins, Colorado and a grandson, Chad, of Tuscon, AZ.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Museum of the American West or to Westward Heights Care Center in care of Hudson's funeral Home, 680 Mount Hope Drive, Lander, WY 82520.
