Opal I. Hansen

Funeral services for Opal I. (Johnson) Hansen, 92, were held Oct. 16, 1999, at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Deb Olenyik officiating. Burial followed at the Valley View Cemetery in Torrington.

She was born on July 7, 1907 in Winterfest, Iowa, the daughter of George B. and Melda May (Jackson) Johnson. She attended high school at Estherville, Iowa, where she graduated in 1927.

On June 6, 1928, she married Carl E. Hansen in Kimball, Neb., where he was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad Company. From 1928 to 1934 the couple worked the extra board. They then moved to North Platte, Neb., where Opal's husband was assigned as telegrapher. In 1950 they moved to Torrington, retiring in 1970.

Opal was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed watching for birds at her son's home in Lusk and during winter vacations in Arizona and Texas. She also enjoyed quilting, making a special quilt for each granddaughter when they graduated from high school. She was a 50 year member of Chapter 22 of the Order of Eastern Star of Torrington.

She is survived by her husband Carl of Torrington; a son Peter M. and his wife Wanda Hansen of Lusk; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two daughters, Esther and Pauline; her parents; two sisters; eight brothers; and several grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Senior Center in Torrington.

The Colyer Funeral Home of Torrington was in charge of arrangements.
