Mother of Mrs. Jack Leas Passes Away at Home in Rapid City

Mrs. Jack Leas of this city was called to Rapid City, S. Dak., last Sunday by the death of her mother, Mrs. Olive Hayes, who passed away in a hospital there early that morning, according to information received in Lusk. Mr. Leas accompanied her. Deceased had been ill for most of the winter, although her condition was not considered serious. Following is a full account of the death, as taken from The Rapid City Daily Journal of Monday, February 2nd.

Mrs. Olive Hayes, 69, a resident of the Black Hawk vicinity for the past 50 years, died early Sunday morning at St. John's hospital. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 3:30, with Rev. E. E. Morrill of the Congregational church officiating. Burial was in Mountain View cemetery, beside the body of her husband, Alexander P. Hayes, who died in 1908.

Mr. and Mrs. Hayes originally came from Pennsylvania, relatives said this morning, going westward to Ohio and Missouri and later coming to the Black Hills, where the Indians were as yet hostile and Mr. Hayes, who was a Civil war veteran, aided in building the railroad into western South Dakota.

Mrs. Hayes is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Cora Leas, of Lusk, Wyo.; and a son, Carl Hayes, Gordon, Nebr.; three stepdaughters, Mrs. Wm. Strong, Rapid City; Mrs. Emma Taylor, Farmingdale, and Mrs. Alice Blair, Caputa; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarak Kirkpatrick, Rapid City.
