Services for Gertrude Newman, former Van Tassell resident, age 101, will be held Thursday, May 9, 1991, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Torrington.

Newman died Monday, May 6, 1991, at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff, Neb. She was born Feb. 22, 1890 at Sparks, Neb., and moved to the Van Tassell area in eastern Wyoming after her marriage in 1915.

She grew up and received her education at Valentine, Neb., and taught school in Valentine for five years while she was also homesteading.

After her marriage to William Hiram Newman at Valentine, the couple moved to the Van Tassell area where they ranched until 1946. They lived in Cedaredge, Colo., until 1949 when they moved to Torrington. Her husband died in 1955 and she continued living in her own home until her death.

Newman was a charter member of the Prairie Center Homemakers. She was also a long-time member of the Farm Bureau and the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU).

Survivors include six children, 37 grandchildren, 80 or more great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
