Maude Outhouse '14 Homesteader Dies Saturday

Mrs. Maude Outhouse, 86, long-time resident of Lusk, died Saturday at the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital. She had been in poor health for some time.

Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Monday at the Peet Chapel with the Rev. Lloyd Bliss of the First United Methodist Church of Scottsbluff, Neb., officiating. A memorial service was conducted by the Lusk Chapter of the American War Mothers.

Mrs. J. P. Watson accompanied Mrs. Hobart Cockerham who sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond the Sunset." Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Roscoe Ross, J. P. Watson, John Mudra, George Pollack, Doyle Blackmore, Legrand Lee, D. W. Smith, Helmuth Klemke, George Sylvester and Floyd Bartos.

Casket bearers were Harry Brown, Joe Kane, James Peterson, Bud Hughes, Mike Hammer and Warren Robertson.

Maude Runyan was born in York County, Neb., April 4, 1888, the daughter of Thomas and Rachael Phillips Runyan. She grew up in York County, attending school and teaching there for several years.

On April 8, 1914, she married Grant "Kid" Outhouse at Burton, Neb. In May of the same year they homesteaded in the Flattop community where their three children were born.

In 1941 they retired and moved to Lusk. They moved to Springview, Neb., in 1946 where they lived until Mr. Outhouse died in1954. Mrs. Outhouse returned to Lusk to be near her family. Her last five years were spent in a rest home.

Mrs. Outhouse was a member of the Methodist Church and the last surviving charter member of the Lusk Chapter of the American War Mothers.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Tony (Mary) Hytrek; two sons, Fay and Delbert Outhouse all of Lusk; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

Her parents, husband, four brothers, and one granddaughter died previously.

Out-of- town relatives attending the service were Mrs. Earl Sylvester, Mills, Neb., Dale Shepperd, Springview, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Tony Outhouse and Timmy, Aurora, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Smith, Randi, Rhonda, Roxi and Cindy, Scottsbluff, Neb.

A memorial has been established to the Niobrara Memorial Hospital.
