Last Rites Held For Bob Powell

Funeral services for Robert Dale Powell, who died unexpectedly March 22, were held from Grace Episcopal Church in Chadron at 10:00 a.m. on March 25 and interment was in Greenwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were James Shillenn of Lusk, Wyo., Bill Powell, Harrison; S. M. McCarty, Lincoln, Nebr.; Glenn Goodrich, Bob Haag, and Maurice Jones of Chadron.

Mr. Powell was born at Harrison on January 8, 1926, the second son of Thera W. and Isabelle (Wallbridge) Powell. His early years were spent on his fathers homestead. He was graduated from Sioux County High School in 1943. He then served two years in the 5th Cavalry in the South Pacific during World War II and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He married Ellen DeHaven on January 9, 1947, at Baker, Mont. They had three children.

Mr. Powell was associated with the L.P. gas business for a number of years in Harrison and Lusk. In 1959 he and his brother-in-law, Richard DeHaven, purchased Pioneer Skelgas Company in Chadron. They had recently expanded their business to include Alliance and Gordon, Nebr.

He was always active in community affairs. He was Commander of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post while living in Harrison. In Lusk he served as an officer in the Elks Lodge for eight years, resigning as an officer when he moved to Chadron. He was an active member of the Masonic Lodge, Elks Lodge, and the American Legion Post in Chadron and served on the Vestry at Grace Episcopal Church and on the Hospital Board. He was secretary of the Nebraska L.P. Gas Association and a director.

Surviving are his wife, Ellen, and the three children, Mrs. Carol Malcolm of Chadron, and Susan Kay and Robert Dale, Jr. at home, one brother, George Powell, Crawford.

Here for the funeral and visiting in Harrison were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hill and two sons of Springville, Utah, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Larson of Alcestor, S. Dak., Mr. Joe Osback of Sioux Falls, S. Dak., Mrs. Gladys Hill of Douglas, Wyo., Ray Hill of Platte Center, Nebr. and Mrs. Joe Topil of Rising City, Nebr.

Among relatives and friends from Harrison attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. William Powell and Johnny, T. M.
