Graveside services set for J.F. Rider

Graveside services of J. Frank Rider, a former Lusk resident, will be held at the Lusk Cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday. He was a resident of Lewistown, Mont.

Former Lusk resident James Franklin Rider died in a Lewistown, Mont., nursing home Sunday, Sept. 15, 1985. He was 102.

Born in Loveland, Colo., Feb. 26, 1883, Mr. Rider moved with his family to Lusk when he was eight. He grew up in the Rawhide Buttes area.

During prohibition, he was a deputy sheriff for Goshen County. He was a rodeo stock contractor and contracted animals for the 1914 Wyoming State Fair rodeo in Douglas.

He married Nora A. Hayes in Wyoming May 8, 1918. She preceded him in death in 1977.

They moved to Montana in 1941. They ranched in Winnett until he retired at the age of 83. They moved to Lewistown in 1966.

They are survived by a daughter, Farel Singley of Lewistown, and four grandchildren, Georgiann Youngstrom of Aberdeen, Idaho, Sharon Hoem of Fremont, Calif., Wesley Singley of Lewistown and Nancy McLeod of Ogden, Utah.

Graveside services were held Sept. 18 at the Lusk Cemetery.

JAMES FRANKLIN RIDER

James Franklin Rider, 102, of Lewiston died Sunday morning at the Central Montana Hospital Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Rider was born Feb. 26, 1883 at Loveland, Colo. the son of Charles and Mary Rider. When he was eight years old his family emigrated by a four horse covered wagon to Lusk, Wyo. While he was young he witnessed the 2,000 to 2,500 Longhorn Texas "doggies" in trail herds.

He used to hunt many wolves, coyotes and bobcats on horseback with his two packs of eight hound dogs.

His first car was a Hupp Mobile in 1913 which had the steering wheel on the right side, carbide lights and carbide tank.

During prohibition, Rider was a deputy sheriff for Goshen County, Wyo. He was also involved in many rodeos where he lived, and furnished the livestock for the rodeo including the first state fair rodeo ever held in Douglas, Wyo in 1914.

On May 8, 1918 he married Nora Adeline Hayes in Wyoming. After his marriage, Rider lived on his homestead in Wyoming where he was engaged in the stock business for 23 years before moving to Montana in 1941.

He was active in ranching and was still riding horseback until his retirement at the age of 83. In 1966 he moved to Lewiston to be near his daughter.

Rider was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

On the occasion of his 100th birthday, he received a Congressional card from President Reagan. A celebration was hosted by his daughter Farel Singley, with many out-of-town guest present.

Rider is survived by one daughter, Mrs. George (Farel) Singley of Lewiston; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1977.

Graveside services for Rider were held today (Wednesday) at the Lusk City Cemetery at Lusk, Wyo. Bishop Jerry Jensen officiated with Peet Funeral Home in charge of Arrangements. The Cloyd Funeral Home was in charge of local arrangements.
