Arthur H. Root Dies of Heart Attack Here Mon.

Arthur H. Root, 76, pioneer and well known resident of Lusk, died Monday at approximately 6:00 p.m. He had just purchased groceries and gotten into his car when he was stricken. He was alone at the time.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. from Peet Chapel with Rev. Theodore Foster, Pastor of St. George's Episcopal Church, officiating.

Arthur Hart Root was born October 29, 1880 in Bayard Ia. The son of Benjamin A. Root. He moved with his parents in a covered wagon to Lusk in 1887.

On March 30,1904 he married Mamie D. Rider. They were the parents of five children. Three of them survived. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1954.

He was foreman for the Tom Bell Cattle Company for 13 years, later homesteading 12 miles south of Lusk in the Royal Valley community. He was very active in the oil boom in Lance Creek and later became associated with Maynard Bishop in business for a number of years.

He and his family moved to California in 1929 and lived there until 1934 when he again returned to Lusk. He and his son, Fred, then became owners of the Shawyer Hotel in Shoshoni which is still operated by Fred Root.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Fred K. of Shoshoni and two daughters, Evelyn D. Stark and Avis M. Stone both of Inglewood, Calif. Two children, Sara Mary and Lyle Delmar; his parents,two brothers and two sisters previously died.

Final Services for the late Arthur H. Root Are Friday; Niobrara County Pioneer Laid at Rest, Lusk Cemetery

Friends of Lusk and Niobrara county, and from distant points gathered at the Chapel of the Peet Funeral Home to pay their respects to the late Arthur H. Root, pioneer resident, at two o'clock Friday afternoon October 12th.

Rev. Theodore Foster of St. George's Episcopal Church officiated at the services. Mesdames Opal Templeton, and Edna DeCastro sang "In The Garden", and "The Old Rugged Cross," accompanied by Mr. J. P. Watson. The remains were laid to rest in the Lusk cemetery with John Siemsen, Jas. Hoblit, Wm. D. Miller, D. A. Shoopman, and Ray DeGering as casketbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Edward M. Arnold, George "Barney" Miller, John Agnew, H. J. Templeton, Hans Gautschi, Henry Petz, Harold Rogers, Z. B. Crinklaw, Charley Hitshew, T. L. Cantwell, John Wesley Wolfe and Anthon Hansen.

Arthur Hart Root, youngest son of Benjamin S. and Sarah Root, was born October 29th, 1880 in Bayard, Iowa and passed away Monday October 29th, 1956, at Lusk, Wyo. at the age of 75 years, 11 months and 9 days. The family moved to Lusk where he grew to manhood. Following his marriage to Mamie D. Rider in 1904, they resided on the "Red" Hansen ranch near the famous Node ranch. Soon there after, Mr. Root became the foreman of the Tom Bell or Node Ranch. He was engaged here for 13 years, when Mr. and Mrs. Root homesteaded south of Lusk in the Royal Valley community, making their home there for six years, at which time they moved to Lusk. Mr. Root then became associated in business with the late Maynard Bishop.

In 1929, Mr. and Mrs. Root moved to Bell, California where he operated a filling station until 1934. That year they returned to Lusk. where they have his wife, Mamie of Lusk; one son, Fred Root, own and operate the Shawver Hotel in Shoshoni.

Mr. and Mrs. Root were the parents of five children, three of whom survive. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, Mamie, of Lusk; one son Fred Root of Shoshoni, Wyo. two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn Stark and Mrs. Avis Stone of Englewood, California; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his two sisters, Cora Root Bell and Lena Root Jones, two brothers, Fred and Frank, a daughter, Sarah Mary in 1911 and a son Lyle Delman in 1935.

Funeral Services For Arthur Root Are Held Friday

Funeral services were held Friday for Arthur H. Root, 76, pioneer and well known resident of Lusk, at 2:00 p.m. from Peet chapel with Rev. Theodore Foster, pastor of St. George's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial was made in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. H. J. Templeton and Mrs. A. F. DeCastro sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Mrs. J. P. Watson was organist.

Active casket bearers were John Siemsen, Levern James, James Hoblit, W.D. Miller, D.A. Shoopman and Ray DeGering. Honorary casket bearers were Edward M. Arnold, Barney Miller, John Agnew, H.J. Templeton, Hans Gautschi, Henry Petz, Harold Rogers, Z.B. Crinklaw, Charley Hitshew, T.L. Cantwell, J. Wesley Wolfe and Anthon Hansen.

Married, at the home of the bride's parents in Lusk yesterday, March 30, 1904, Mr. Arthur Root and Miss Mamie Rider,  Rev. Cleveland officiating. After the ceremony a sumptuous dinner was served, to which a few invited guests sat down to the table and partook of the many good things served for the occasion. The contracting parties are well and favorably known, having lived here ever since they were mere children. The happy young couple have a host of admiring friends with whom the HERALD joins in wishing then a prosperous and happy journey through life.
