Emma Lou Ross, Polio victim Dies Saturday
Miss Emma Lou Ross, 27, died Saturday afternoon in a Casper Hospital where she had been a patient for four days. Funeral services were held in Casper Monday morning and graveside services were held in Lusk Monday afternoon.
Miss Ross was stricken with polio in November 1955 and since has been confined to an iron lung or respirator. Despite her awesome handicap she was graduated from NCHS receiving her diploma on her 18th birthday. By holding a stylus in her mouth she typed on an electric typewriter purchased for her by the Lusk Lions Club. She remembered birthdates of friends and relatives and had a hobby of sending cards. By some it will be remembered that she was something of a football rating expert.
Except for the last two years which she spent in Casper, her entire life was spent in Niobrara County.
Funeral service was held from the Hillside Chapel in Casper with the Rev. Stuart Cook of the East Side Christian Church officiating. The Rev. Harold Brink of the Lusk Open Bible Church officiated at the graveside service at the Lusk cemetery.
Pallbearers were Fred Sheaman, Bob Dixon, Clayton Dixon, Frank Johnston, Fay Outhouse, and Bob Miller. James Krejci, Flores Kruse and Joe Traphagan were honorary pallbearers.
Dinner was served at the First Baptist Church of Lusk for relatives and close friends.
Survivors include her father, Roscoe Ross, Lance Creek; two sister, Jane Ross, Banning Calif., Mrs. Mary Dickau, Shawnee; four brothers, Marvin and Thomas, Casper, Riley and John, Lance Creek. Her mother died in 1951.
