Coral E. Smallwood

Coral E. "Brownie" Smallwood, 72, of Newcastle, died Monday, Dec. 9, 1991, at Weston County Memorial Hospital in Newcastle.

Services were held Dec. 12 at 2 p.m. at Worden Funeral Chapel in Newcastle, with the Rev. Al Sims of Newcastle Southern Baptist Church officiating.

Burial with military graveside rites by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2516 were in Greenwood Cemetery in Newcastle.

Memorials have been established to Michaels Senior Citizens Center and the Hospice of Weston County in Newcastle.

Smallwood was born Feb. 26, 1919, at a ranch on the Cheyenne River to Mark and Nellie Mae (Hicks) Smallwood.

He attended local schools through his junior year in high school.

He entered the Navy and served on various ships during World War II, including the aircraft carrier Lexington.

After his discharge in 1945, he married Audrey Wright.

On Jan. 25, 1958, he married Hope Cowger Martens at Truth or Consequences, N.M. They lived in Fabens, Texas, where he worked for Lee Moore Construction doing road work.

In the early 1960s, the Smallwoods moved back to Weston County where he worked construction and for various ranches until his retirement. The Smallwoods lived in the Lusk area for a time.

Survivors include his wife, of Newcastle; two sons, Jim Smallwood of Biggs, Calif. and Larry Smallwood of Oroville, Calif.; a stepson, John E. Martens of Sebastopal, Calif.; a sister, Velma Bowden of Ft. Collins, Colo.; two brothers, Juel Smallwood of Fabens and Horace Smallwood of Kingman, Ariz.; his first wife, Audrey Wright Ellis of Biggs; five grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Sylvan Smallwood and a sister, Veda Lane.
